Humanitarian Development in Emergencies

Humanitarian Development in Emergencies

Many of the countries in the developing world are susceptible to frequent natural disasters and outbreaks of conflict, resulting in already vulnerable people losing their homes and livelihoods. CEND offers a wide range of consultancy services in project preparation, implementation, and evaluation for nonprofits to enable them to deliver lifesaving support in the aftermath of man-made crises or natural disasters.

The goal of our emergency program is to fulfil our humanitarian mandate and effectively respond to and mitigate against natural and human influenced disasters.

Our Areas of Expertise
Emergency Shelters

CEND’s emergency shelter programs provide protection from the weather, increase privacy and the ability to live in dignity, particularly for women and girls, and support basic living needs for people affected by conflict or disasters. We have a robust understanding of shelter and settlement programs and help nonprofits through project design to enable them to save lives through the provision of kits of non-food items for household use, shelter kits for emergency protection, sealing kits to weatherize existing shelters, and rehabilitation and repairs to individual homes and collective centers where groups of displaced people reside.

Emergency Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

CEND’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in emergencies programs are designed to assist nonprofits in addressing the specific needs of the most vulnerable crisis-affected populations who cannot afford, or physically do not have access to, water or basic hygiene items. Moreover, we offer a range of consulting services with programs and activities that enable nonprofits to rehabilitate or repair water supply and sanitation systems and train beneficiaries in their use, maintenance, and oversight. We assist nonprofits to deliver important WASH information—such as proper handwashing methods—through simple, context-appropriate, picture-based hygiene promotion messaging.

Emergency Food Relief

When disaster strikes, the effects can be devastating, leaving communities in turmoil and individuals struggling to meet their basic needs. CEND’s Emergency Food Relief initiative is committed to supporting nonprofits with projects and programs that provide immediate assistance and relief to those affected by natural disasters. Whether it’s floods, earthquakes, or other emergencies, our goal remains the same: to work with nonprofits to ensure that no one goes hungry during their time of need.

CEND’s strategy often involves the use of food aid to vulnerable households, labor-based methods to reengage actors in their own recovery and a focus on women, and can also include the deployment of innovative electronic food voucher systems.
